He was a member of the world-renowned 40-voice Westminster Choir until conductor Joseph Flummerfelt’s retirement. Ryan has sung under such conductors as Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Julius Rudel, Alan Gilbert, Joseph Flummerfelt, and Nicholas McGeegan. He has been a featured soloist in performances of Mozart’s Missa Brevis in F, and Vesperae Solennes de Confessore with the Greater South Jersey Chorus and Orchestra. He was also rehearsal soloist for Stephen Paulus’ Visions of Hildegaard under direction of Stephen Paulus himself. He has performed as a bass soloist for a number of Bach cantatas, including BWV 63, Christen ätzet diesen Tag and BWV 187, Es wartet alles auf dich. In 2006, Ryan sang as baritone soloist for Buxtehude’s Jesu meine Freude. In the realm of opera, Ryan has performed the role of Samuel in Pirates of Penzance by Gilbert and Sullivan and appeared alongside soprano Julia Kemp and tenor Guy Rothfuss for Bucks County Choral Society’s “A Night at the Opera”. In May 2005, Ryan traveled to Charleston, SC with the Westminster Choir, often hailed by critics as “the world’s best opera chorus”. He sang role of “Kibitz” in the American premier of Walter Braunfels’ Die Vögel (The Birds) at the Spoleto Festival USA. He has studied voice with American baritone, Elem Eley and Helden Tenor, George Gray. As a conductor, Ryan, has led various choral ensembles at Westminster Choir College and area schools and churches. Ryan currently serves at Marlboro Memorial Middle School (MMMS) in Morganville, NJ, where he directs six choral ensembles and teaches World Music Drumming. In 2007, Ryan formed the Royal Ringers handbell choir in an effort to provide another opportunity for music making at MMMS. They are one of only a hand-full of bronze middle school bell choirs in the country. In addition to directing bell choirs at MMMS, Ryan is a handbell clinician for area bell choirs. Ryan’s conducting mentors have included Sun Min Lee (Westminster Chapel Choir), Frank Abrahams (Westminster Conservatory Youth Chorale), Vincent Metallo (American Boy Choir), James Jordan (Williamson Voices) and, Bryce Hayes (Princeton Day School Choir). Ryan has also enjoyed master classes with Stefan Parkman (Swedish and Danish Radio Choirs) and Joseph Flummerfelt (New York Choral Artists).
